Hey everyone 👋
Welcome to this week’s ShutterCraft 101 newsletter. Thank you for reading 📚
Cypress Calm
I'm a big fan of fishing backwater oxbows and sloughs since many of those areas aren’t too pressured.
On this particular day, my brother and I discovered a pristine oxbow far north of where we typically fish on the Sabine River.
My eyes were instantly drawn to the open shoreline of cypress trees, a calm mirror reflection on the water, and the relaxing sky above.
An opportunity to photograph that I could not pass up.
You can see the waterline on the trees - a visual indicator of just how much water had fallen out of this area (we guessed around 2ft).
Patriotic Doc
While fishing an offshoot arm off of the Sabine River main channel, I noticed several interesting docks, houseboats, and other river camps.
Some were downright shanty (which I plan to revisit and document someday).
Others were well kept and maintained.
This dock caught my eye with all of the American flags, and I thought, what a nice scene to capture.
Lake Layers
As we were getting ready to launch the boat Saturday morning, I noticed this old log on the shore. While walking down the bank to frame this shot, I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to capture it.
At this time, Toledo Bend was at a low pool stage. I figured this log is normally (mostly) underwater. I took a couple of quick pictures, but nothing about it spoke to me.
When I knelt to capture a more level scene, I immediately saw the lake layers.
Grass, wood, aquatic vegetation, water, tree line, and finally the sky.
The whole ecosystem.
Thank you for reading ShutterCraft 101, and I hope you have a great rest of your week. 📷
